Use of process saw for load relief and crack control in log
Do not be surprised to see a cut on the upper surfaces of a round log or carriage (semi-oval log). This is a
special technological saw that allows to control the process of cracking in the log.
What is the essence of the methodology? If it is impossible to avoid the formation of cracks in drying
logs, and they are really not avoided even for winter forest, the task of controlling the occurrence of
these cracks arises. It is better if the cracks (or the deepest of them) are directed upwards, there they
will be covered by the slot of the upper log. At the same time moisture will not get into cracks, cold
bridges will not form, other negative processes for wood and home will not occur.
To set the direction of cracks formation and discharge saw is performed in the upper part of log, depth is
about one third of diameter. Propil allows to remove load (internal and external stresses) from the log
and to indicate the required direction of concentration of internal forces, which inevitably arise in the
log as a result of shrinkage and pressure of upper crowns.
Propyl is made along the entire surface of the log except for visible areas (near the ends, cuts, etc.).
The photographs in Figures 1 and 2 show logs in the bowl areas. Notice the props applied to the upper
surfaces of the lower logs.
On a fig.2 the result
of use of unloading cuts is shown, allowing to operate occurrence
of vertical cracks.

As mentioned, unfortunately, there are still construction firms where surprised to shrug your question
about unloading props, although this technology has become widespread.
